Environment Canada Lowers Threshold for GHG Emissions Reporting

On July 11, 2009, Environment Canada published a notice in the Canada Gazette, under Section 46 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999), requiring the reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the year 2009.  Facilities with GHG emissions that meet or exceed the reporting threshold must report their GHG information to Environment Canada on or before June 1, 2010.

Highlights

bullet The reporting threshold has been lowered from 100,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent (CO2E) to 50,000 tonnes CO2E.
bullet Two reporting categories (i.e. Venting and Flaring, and Waste and Wastewater) have been split into separate categories.
bullet GHG data collection will be transferred from Statistics Canada to Environment Canada starting March 2010.
